Peter Bye Family Scholarship Fund

The Peter Bye Family Scholarship helps medical students at the University of Minnesota Duluth and encourages the work of family-practice medical professionals in rural and small towns in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

This scholarship was established by Peter and Caroline Bye in 1998 in memory of her father, an Iron Range physician.

Recipients must sign a statement of intent to work as physicians in the Community Foundation’s region for a minimum of five years. If a recipient fails to provide these services within 10 years of completion of residency training, he or she must repay all grants without interest.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be first-year medical students who are or were residents of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation’s service region (Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis Counties in Minnesota and Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron and Price Counties in Wisconsin). 
  • They must attend the University of Minnesota Medical School-Duluth
  • Declare a family practice specialty
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need

 

Scholarship Grant Range

$5,000 per semester up to 4 semesters or Medical School (Total $20,000) 

 

Application timeline

  • This scholarship will be available every other year. Applications will be made available through the UMD Medical School.  

 

Award Details

  • This scholarship may be used for expenses of post-secondary education at any accredited college, university or technical/ vocational school
  • Award Payments will be mailed directly to the school/ university 
    • Fall Payments are mailed July 15-30
    • Spring Payments are mailed December 15-30
  • Transferring Schools: Please contact DSACF if you plan on transferring schools. Transferring schools does not automatically transfer your scholarship. If a transfer occurs after scholarship money has been disbursed it may take up to 90 days to reprocess the scholarship payment. 

 

Tax information

DSACF encourages scholarship recipients to seek tax advice regarding scholarships. According to the IRS: Scholarships, fellowship grants, and other grants are tax-free if you meet the following conditions:

  • You’re a candidate for a degree at an educational institution that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly enrolled body of students in attendance at the place where it carries on its educational activities; and
  • The amounts you receive are used to pay for tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at the educational institution, or for fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at the educational institution.
