Applicants for the student award must be high school seniors for whom academic or personal success may not have come easily yet who have achieved through self-motivation, perseverance and guidance of others. This fund honors the tenets and beliefs of Greg Irons by recognizing and rewarding the efforts of students in Duluth Public Schools as well as teachers who help students succeed. Greg Irons was a lifelong Duluthian and a graduate of Duluth East High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth. In high school and college, he excelled on athletic fields as well as in his classrooms through self-motivation and perseverance. He worked for the Duluth Public Schools as a science teacher, minority student tutor and athletic coach. Greg Irons died in a hunting accident in 1989.

The Greg Irons Award gives out a Student Award and a Teacher Award 

Eligibility for the Student Award

  • Graduate of: Duluth Denfeld; Duluth East, Harbor City International, Adult Learning Center
  • Demonstrate: Leadership, community involvement or participation in school activities. 

Eligibility for the Teacher award

  • Applicants for the teaching award must teach in the Duluth Public Schools.

Scholarship Grant Range for Students

  • $1,000 for one year

Scholarship Grant Range for Teachers

  • $500

Application timeline for Students 

  • This scholarship requires a code from your counselor. Application is open: December 1 – February 15

Teacher Nominations

  • Teachers must be nominated by colleagues, students, or parents of the Duluth Public school district. 
  • Nomination applications are available each spring. 

Award Details for Students

  • This scholarship may be used for expenses of post-secondary education at any accredited college, university or technical/ vocational school
  • Award Payments will be mailed directly to the school/ university 
    • Fall Payments are mailed July 15-30
    • Spring Payments are mailed December 15-30
  • Transferring Schools: Please contact DSACF if you plan on transferring schools. Transferring schools does not automatically transfer your scholarship. If a transfer occurs after scholarship money has been disbursed it may take up to 90 days to reprocess the scholarship payment. 

Tax information

DSACF encourages scholarship recipients to seek tax advice regarding scholarships. According to the IRS: Scholarships, fellowship grants, and other grants are tax-free if you meet the following conditions:

  • You’re a candidate for a degree at an educational institution that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly enrolled body of students in attendance at the place where it carries on its educational activities; and
  • The amounts you receive are used to pay for tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at the educational institution, or for fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at the educational institution.
