Support for a new generation in the construction trades
DULUTH—The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation is pleased to offer a new generation of workers the tools and gear they need to start a successful career in the construction industry. The spring round of the Duluth Builders Exchange Apprenticeship Scholarship is open March 1-April 1, 2024.
“Preparing for a career change, and the financial hardship during the transition has been more than I had expected. Having access to support like this is something that’s never been available to me, and I am very appreciative!” said Kayla Zinter, a 2023 Scholarship Recipient.
Who Can Apply:
- Applicants must be registered with a trades union and entering the first or second year of an apprenticeship program in the construction industry.
- Residents of Aitkin, Ashland, Bayfield, Carlton, Cook, Douglas, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, or St. Louis County are eligible.
- Trade apprenticeship programs related to the construction industry include: Boilermaker, Carpenter, Electrician Operator, Elevator Mechanic, Glazier, HVAC, Insulator, Iron Worker, Landscaper, Mason, Millwright, Painter, Plumber, Plasterer, Sheet Metal Worker, Ironworker, Roofer, Welder.
- Applicants must include a copy (photo) of your State-issued Apprenticeship Agreement. (AKA Indenture Paper).
What is the Award:
Scholarship awards of up to $500 granted to purchase tools and equipment required to start an apprenticeship program. Acme Tools (Duluth) and Bear Shoe Works are the two participating area vendors. Applicants will be asked to specify which vendor they will use based on a provided tool list.
How are Scholarships Selected:
- The selection committee for this scholarship will consider the applicants intention & motivation to pursue a career in the building/construction industry in NE MN or NW WI.
- Financial need.
