The Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students who live in the central part of Duluth to attend one of the area’s colleges.
Applicants should be graduating seniors from Duluth Denfeld or Duluth East High Schools who live in the area formerly served by Central High School. Recipients must attend the College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Lake Superior College or Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.
No academic criteria are fixed for application to this award. Recipients will be chosen based on financial need, academic record, written recommendations and seriousness of purpose. In addition, candidates must have demonstrated fine character, consideration for others, perseverance and a desire to succeed.
Generally, awards are divided into spring and fall installments and are renewable for four years, assuming proper academic progress (GPA of 2.5 or greater). Depending on the availability of funds, full-time summer school attendance may be awarded if sufficient credits are earned.
The Duluth Central High School Class of 1944 established the George A. Beck scholarship fund in 1964 to honor Mr. Beck, principal of Duluth Central from 1939 to 1965. This was also thought to provide a memory of “Old Central,” which was at that time destined to be replaced by a new high school. Subsequently, other classes, alumni groups and individuals contributed to this fund, and it became known as the Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship.
