Scholarship Recipients

 
Current Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation scholarship recipients network during the 2008 Scholarship Reunion Party. The picnic, held at the Park Point Beachhouse, was held to celebrate the Community Foundation's 25th Anniversary and to launch the Foundation's newest scholarship Pay It Forward.

2011 Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation Scholarship Recipients:
  • The Anderson-Niskanen Scholarship, given to graduating seniors of Duluth Public Schools who will attend UMD or UM-Twin Cities, was awarded to Hannah Sorvik of East High School.
  • The Paul Antonich Scholarship, established to honor the memory of Central High School student Paul Antonich, was awarded to Carson Powers.
  • The Darrell and Palchie Asselin Scholarship, awarded to non-traditional students entering their junior or senior year of college, was awarded to UMD students Julianne Peters and Aliina Charging Hawk.
  • The Bernard B. and Mary L. Brusin Scholarship, which was established as a memorial and provides renewable scholarships to Jewish and Roman Catholic students for college or vocational training, was awarded to Central High School graduate Christine Thomas.
  • The first ever Kathryn A. Bullyan Scholarship, honoring community involvement and academic achievement in Hermantown High School graduates, was given to Luke Johansen.
  • Frances Bates of Superior was selected as the 2011 winner of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her understanding of and efforts to improve race relations in the Twin Ports.
  • The Duluth Building and Construction Trades Council Scholarship, awarded to children whose parents are members of one of the unions affiliated with the Duluth Building Trades Council, was awarded to Marshall graduate Isaac Serre and Superior graduate Ashley Johnholtz.
  • The Duluth Central High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to graduating seniors of Central High School to help them achieve their educational goals, was awarded to Joy Gilmer.
  • The Duluth Central Sports Association Legacy Scholarship provides financial awards to student athletes who attend Central High School and who contribute to their teams both on and off the field. This year’s recipients are Nicole Larson and Luke Johannessen.
  • The Julie Enberg Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to female undergraduate athletes at the University of Minnesota Duluth in honor of former student and coach Julie Enberg, was awarded to Hannah Johnson.
  • The Peter M. Gargano Scholarship, funded by Ulland Brothers Inc. for children of their employees, was awarded to Travis Eddy of Virginia.
  • The recipient of the 2011 Gernander Scholarship, which honors Denfeld graduates who have demonstrated both athletic and academic excellence, is Amanda Boman.
  • Meghan Safstrom is the 2011 recipient of the Patricia S. Gustafson ’56 Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating female from Denfeld or Marshall who exemplifies the life of Patricia Gustafson.
  • The Jeanne H. Hemmingway Scholarship, a renewable award for residents of Cook, Lake or St. Louis counties who will attend UMD, has been awarded to Amanda Boman of Denfeld High School.
  • Scholarships in memory of Greg Irons, who devoted his professional life to teaching and helping others, were awarded to Denfeld High School graduate Luke Upton and East High School graduate Ashley Khalar.
  • The Greg Irons Teacher Award, which honors outstanding employees of ISD 709 who uphold the tenets of Greg Irons, was presented to Cathy Klaber-Hartl, an instructor at Central High School.
  • Residents of the Hermantown School District and graduates of Hermantown High School are eligible to apply for the Jackson Club scholarship. This year there were five winners. They are:

  • The Cory Jam Memorial Award is given to an East High School senior on the basis of academics and community involvement. The 2011 winner is Jack Sandbulte.
  • The Lake Superior Medical Society Tilderquist Scholarship is given to students entering their second year at the UMD Medical School. The 2011 winners are Kaitlyn Pelowski and Thomas Hanson.
  • The Minnesota Power New Generation Scholarship rewards the academic excellence of local college and university students who are entering specific fields of study.

  • A second Minnesota Power award, the Community Involvement Scholarship, recognizes the contributions that high school students make in their communities. The twenty winners of that award for 2011 are:

  • The Modern Woodmen of America Scholarship Fund, which was established by the Duluth Camp No. 2341 Modern Woodmen of America to provide assistance to a non-traditional student in financial need, awarded scholarships to UMD students Julianne Peters and Aliina Charging Hawk.
  • The Daniel H. and Catherine L Mundt Scholarship for Late Bloomers named three winners this year. They are Kelly Lind, Brett Odegard and Karli Peterson.
  • The Hubert A. Nelson Scholarship, a renewable scholarship given to business/accounting students who will attend either UMD or UWS, was awarded to Central High School graduate Kelly Peterson.
  • The Amelia and Emanuel Nessell Family Scholarship, honoring the memory of Amelia and Emanuel Nessell, was awarded to Aaron Dunphy-Knighten of Marshall School.
  • The Richard B. Pearson Memorial Scholarship, named after former Superintendent of Schools and designed to honor students who will pursue a degree in education, will be awarded to East High School senior Megan Allen.
  • The Dr. Mark Rathke Family Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior from the Marshall School, went to Laura Schoessow.
  • New in 2011, the Daniel Patrick Riley Memorial Scholarship was created to assist students of Cook County High School to pursue a degree in a liberal arts field. The first recipient was Will Brandenburg.
  • The Steve Rolland Youth Peacemaker Award Fund, which honors youth who undertake community peacemaking activities in the Duluth area, was awarded to Cortez ‘CJ’ Ham.
  • The Jack and Mary Rowe Memorial Scholarship, which goes to public high school students in Duluth, Hermantown or Proctor who will pursue a career in engineering, was awarded to Hermantown High School senior Allyson Haynes.
  • The Lawrence E. and Mabel Jackson Rudberg Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to graduating seniors from Two Harbors High School and Duluth public and private high schools, awarded a scholarship to Two Harbors senior Katelyn Adams.
  • Another new scholarship in 2011 is the Saturn Systems Scholarship. This renewable award recognizes students who will pursue a degree in computer science at UMD. The first ever winner is Mujtaba Al-Tameemi, a graduate of the Marshall School.
  • The Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship, awarded to a ‘late bloomer’ in the Duluth school system, was given to Jacob Lauzon.
  • The Phil Shykes Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Hermantown High School who demonstrates involvement in community service and academic excellence. The 2011 recipient is Marisohn Frank.
  • The Jean Quinn Sullivan Scholarship was created to assist education students at UWS in completing their degree. This year’s recipient of a renewable scholarship is Christina Cassano.
  • Tammi Davis is this year’s recipient of the John A. Sullivan Scholarship. This scholarship, for graduates of Superior High School who are studying education at UWS, is renewable for two years.
  • The Superior East High All-Class Reunion Scholarship, given to a descendant of a graduate of Superior East High School, was awarded to Maximilian Florestano.
  • Marin Ekstrom, a graduate of Two Harbors High School, is the very first recipient of the Superior Shores Resort Scholarship. This scholarship for students of Lake Superior School District was created in 2010.
  • The Ulland Brothers Inc. Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to the children of Ulland Brothers Inc. employees, was awarded to Alyssa Sager of Albert Lee High School.
  • The Robert B. & Sophia Whiteside Scholarships, given on the basis of academic excellence, have been awarded to the following twenty five Duluth high school students for the 2011 academic year:

These selections bring the total number of scholarships awarded by the Community Foundation to more than 5000 since it made its first award in 1986. More than $16 million have been contributed to local students over that time.
